Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of irrational beliefs on mother's parentification experience and overprotective experience on parenting behavior. For this purpose, 430 mothers who live in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi who are raising their children. The survey was conducted on parentification experience, overprotective experience, irrational beliefs and parenting behavior. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 program and AMOS 21.0 program. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant correlation between parentification experience, overprotective experience, irrational belief, and parenting behavior. Second, in the path analysis between the variables, irrational beliefs showed a partial mediation effect in the path between mother's parentification experience and positive parenting behavior, and irrational beliefs showed complete mediation effect in the path between parentification experience and negative parenting behavior. Therefore, it can be seen that mother's parentification experience has a direct influence on positive parenting behavior and an indirect influence through irrational beliefs, and negative parenting behavior indirectly through irrational beliefs. The pathway between mothers' overprotective experience and positive parenting behavior, irrational beliefs in path between overprotective experience and negative parenting behavior showed full mediation effect. Therefore, it is confirmed that mother's overprotective experience indirectly influences both positive and negative parenting behavior through irrational beliefs. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study are discussed.
